Diet and serum protein levels of urban Zulu adults.

چکیده
The serum protein pattern of Africans is usually found to differ from that of Europeans, being characterized by lower albumin levels and higher total globulin levels. There is evidence that this may be due to a number of possibly interrelated factors, viz. parasitism, malnutrition, liver disease, and, to a limited extent, genetic considerations. There is no unambiguous evidence that diet plays a major role in producing the characteristic African serum protein pattern. Various epidemiological studies have indicated the probable importance of diet. Studies in Durban (Powell, 1958), Uganda (Holmes, Stanier, and Thompson, 1955), and Salisbury (Gelfand, 1958) have shown that African male nurses, students, and hospital orderlies, who partake of a relatively good diet, tend to have higher albumin levels and lower globulin levels than other African groups. Further, it has been shown that West Africans domiciled in Britain tend to show a rise in their serum albumin levels, and after some years a limited drop in their initially high serum globulin levels (Schofield, 1957). Similarly, a rise has been found in the serum albumin levels of African students after a few months in residence at Makerere College (Holmes, 1954). In each of these instances, however, the dietary differences were accompanied by a variety of other

Effect of Garcinia cambogia extract on body weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio, and serum non-esterified fatty acids and C-reactive protein levels in rats fed with atherogenic diet
The aim of the study was to investigate the improving effect of Garcinia cambogia extract on performance metrics, and serum non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in rats fed with atherogenic diet. Thirty, one-year-old, female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to threeexperimental groups of ten animals each. Control group was fed with basal diet (2% liqui...

This experiment was conducted to compare the effect of probiotic thepax® in diets with different quantities of protein on the performance of Cobb-500 broiler chickens and their serum antibody level against Newcastle disease vaccine (NDV). Two basal diets were formulated based on NRC (1994) recommendations which had NRC (sufficient protein diet) and 90% NRC (low protein diet) for protein. The ba...

متن کاملInterrelationship between Androgen Levels, Ageing, and Cognitive Functions
As men get older, there is a decline in functioning of many biological systems; the endocrine systems share such changes in hormone levels. Ageing in men is accompanied by progressive, but individually variable decline in serum testosterone production in healthy men especially in men over 60 years of age. Androgens determine the differentiation of male internal and external genitalia as well as...
متن کاملRelationships of Serum Level of High- Sensitivity C- Reactive Protein (hs- CRP) and White Blood Cell (WBC) Count with Gamma- Glutamyltransferase among Iranian Healthy Adults
Background & Objective: There are many common infections and inflammations among people over the world. This demands an affordable and reliable test with high sensitivity/specificity to predict or confirm the diagnosis of such cases in routinely clinical practice. In the present study, we aimed to find any potential correlation between serum levels of GGT and CRP- Q and/or hs- CRP and ...
